The original building was built in 1888 as Public School (PS) 2724 Garfield.  In 1914, it was moved to its present location as PS 3849 Garfield North.  Due to a lack of student numbers, the school closed in 1976.

In 1977, the four special schools for the physically disabled in Melbourne took over the building for use as a school camp.  A bunk house and ablutions block was added by the Christian Work Camps Group.  The first camps began that year.

In 1995, the camp committee decided it was having great difficulties keeping the camp open.  It asked the committee of the Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre to save the camp.  After a combined year, a new Garfield North committee of management was formed.

A number of new schools, all schools for students with an intellectual disability, became members.  The new committee has worked very enthusiastically for over ten years and many improvements have been made. The camp is now functioning again successfully and we look forward to the future.
